When you have limited time at a big exhibition, what should you do? A half-day at the Louvre? An hour on the D.C. Mall? Do you shallowly gather as much as you can? Or do you go deep within something specific?
I chose the later at the Museum of the Confederacy at their 6/3/2011 Members Gala.
There were crowds and music and food and drink and silent auction tables and of course the Museum’s exhibits. My discovery time was spent contemplating a singular artwork depicting a Civil War snowball fight near Fredericksburg. “It was the greatest snowball battle ever fought. It showed that men are but children of a larger growth. If all battles would terminate that way it would be a great improvement on the old slaughtering plan.” – John Casler, 33rd Virginia Infantry. This image is within a museum that features focused displays on the battles of Vicksburg, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Sharpsburg, Shiloh, Bull Run and on and on; that features weaponry and uniforms, horror and sorrow, and of course torn flags.
There at the Members Gala the band – “Wayfarer” – played upbeat country bluegrass as all of mingled and ate and drank. “Salty Dog” had toes tapping while I contemplated the snowball fight that too place 200 years ago.
