What artform is the bedrock of Americana? I’d probably vote for the good old choir.

Folks of all ages have been long-time choir listeners and participants in schools and churches and communities. And what’s more Americana than going to a community choir concert on a Sunday afternoon?

On 6/5/2011 I got to hear the Richmond Choral Society celebrate its 65th anniversary by presenting a delicious twelve-pack that had just about everything: spiritual, popular, a cappella, closed-book, soloist, and of course “Gloria in Excelsis.” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” caused the 70-plus-year-old in front of me to put her arm around her hubby and rhythm-tap his shoulder while the 80-plus-year-old beside me chuckled.

And the finale – “How Can I keep from Singing?” – lifted us to an extended standing O.
