“A liberal must have written the play,” was what I overheard from someone seated behind me at the 11/25/2011 performance of “Why Torture is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them” at the Firehouse Theatre Project.

My eyes and ears and sensibilities were firmly attached to Bill Patton’s character – a right-wing, weapons-collecting, torture-inflicting caricature of extremism. His was a tour de force performance in this over-the-top crazy comedic play that featured a range of tour de forces including the tortured removal of some fingers and an ear.

“Not for everyone” is the phrase that often accompanies my thoughts about the Firehouse’s bold selections, and that’s precisely why J.C. and I have been audience mainstays since the theatre’s beginnings: we’re never disappointed in the Theatre’s unabashed willingness to present theatre that you’d likely not find elsewhere in the region

John: Nice to see your piece about "Why Torture is Wrong...". I saw it about two weeks ago and delighted with the performance. Sure the tiny glitches and timing could have used a bit of polish. Billy Christopher has done a lovely job of pulling us into the inane, the struggle, the prejudice, and the total stupidity that seems to fill the contemporary milieu. All done with grace, humor, and irony by a delicious cast. Bravo to all involved. (My mother would have hated it, so I know I'm going in the right direction). love to you and the family. e
