Patsy Cline singing “Got a Lot of Rhythm in My Soul” on charmingly grainy black and white big-screen film with just-right audio greeted me as I entered the “Virginia Rocks!” exhibition on 8/28/2010 at the Virginia Historical Society.
Subtitled, “The History of Rockabilly in the Commonwealth,” this exhibition kept me smiling and toe-tapping while it educated me.
“The Female Elvis”? Now I know all about Janis Martin (and why her career came to a crashing halt).
“The Father of Heavy Metal”? Now I know.
Photos of little-boy Elvis and little-boy Wayne Newton and youngster Roy Clark are part of this beautifully sensitive and poignant tribute to an important slice of Virginia music. I saw the vintage juke box, the blue suede shoes, the posters and fan magazines, and all sorts of still-hot stuff. Free exhibition, and free full-color, full-size, glossy souvenir program!
