What do Inva Mula-Tchako and Andrea Green have in common? Each supplies an operatic voice for an enigmatic artwork that I love. The former is the voice of Diva Plavalaguna in the movie, “The Fifth Element,” and the later is the voice and face for Stefani Byrd and Wes Eatin’s projected artwork entitled “Diva” that I saw at 1708 Gallery’s InLight exhibition on 10/21/2011.

It’s Mercer Island in Lake Washington just outside of Seattle: population 22,000, among whom is an 91-year-old artist named Carmen Sherbeck. I discovered her on 9/30/2011 at Powhatan County’s McSweeney Farm B&B where colleagues and I dined on a deeeelish brunch that we had won.

It’s not possible to truly experience someone else’s feelings, but some artworks can get you pretty close. I experienced two such artworks recently: one on 9/24/2011 at the Sundance Resort in Utah, and the other on 9/29/2011 in Richmond’s Scott’s Addition.

Although I haven’t met or talked with Robert A. Williams and thus don’t know his thinking, I did attend the 9/2/2011 opening reception for his ambrotypes exhibition at Corporate & Museum Frame entitled “Morphogenesis.”   On 9/1/2011 I picked up a free copy of PODIUM III at CVS. This is the printed “literary and arts journal for Richmond youth” published by the Podium Foundation
